An ancient craft originally practiced on ivory is adapted to different kinds of wood as well. The community of Ivory carvers still known as “Hast daant waale” from Rajasthan. The elephant statue, with its majestic walking posture, is handmade by artisans of Jaipur. This particular design of carving is called Jali cutting.The Jali cutting is quite complex and is a process of removing the wood inside the figurine leaving behind the intricately connected design. This Jali cut elephant is carved with a baby elephant inside and looks very artistic and aesthetic.

    An ancient craft originally practiced on ivory is adapted to different kinds of wood as well. The community of Ivory carvers still known as “Hast daant waale” from Rajasthan and Haryana have over the years evolved their craft to carving on wood as well. The craftsmen create decorative artifacts, jewellery and utility products like lamps, boxes, photo frames and pen stands out of finely carved wood. These craftsmen generally work on sandalwood and the less expensive Kadam wood. Sandalwood is softer to work on and hence, requires slightly blunt tools as against sharper ones for the Kadam
